Our support services

We specialise in providing “low-care” support services to our older tenants, enabling them to live independent and fulfilling lives in the communities they want to live in.

Sheltered housing and Support Services Officers

Each of our purpose-built sheltered housing schemes is staffed by an on-site Support Services Officer during working hours.

The Support Services Officer is on hand to provide more vulnerable tenants with the additional security of knowing there is someone available to call in an emergency and to provide a little extra help to tenants in managing their health and well-being – the Support Services Officer will work with each tenant individually to draw up a tailored plan of support, which may include:

  • a daily welfare visit or phone call
  • liaison with health and care services as required
  • help with admin tasks such as filling in forms and reading / explaining official letters
  • support to attend appointments or leisure activities

Tenants in sheltered schemes can also benefit from:

  • 24-hour emergency on call assistance for vulnerable tenants
  • communal facilities such as a lounge, kitchen, laundry and gardens
  • a range of social and leisure activities, often delivered by external groups

Our Support Services Officers and other staff work in partnership with statutory and voluntary agencies and other local partners to ensure that we provide effective support in our schemes and deliver the outcomes that are highlighted when individuals are referred to these services.

Margaret’s Café

Our Café provides a setting for our tenants to socialise, get support and advice, and talk openly within a relaxed and informal environment. Everybody is welcome to attend, whether Trust tenants or other members of the community and you do not need to book in advance. The café is important for tackling the problem of loneliness for those living with Dementia.

The Café convenes every Wednesday afternoon between 1pm – 3pm, in the tenants’ lounge at the Trust’s Abyssinia Court scheme in Crouch End.

As well as being an opportunity to socialise, relax and enjoy a cup of tea, attendees have the opportunity to hear from a variety of guest speakers, including health and social care professionals and representatives from the local community, about topics and services relevant to them.

A range of activities are also available each week, designed to stimulate the mind and maintain well-being including arts, crafts, gentle exercise sessions, music, dance and other activities designed around the requests of cafe-goers.

The Cafe is run by the same member of staff, which means attendees can develop a good relationship with somebody who understand their interests, concerns and needs.

If you would like to attend the Café or just find out more, you can call Hornsey Housing Trust on 020 8340 6374. The Trust’s Events and Activities calendar is also a great way to find out about all the exciting things happening at the Café each week.

The Café always welcomes volunteers, with opportunities including using one of your talents to present to the group, engaging with others to provide support, or the all-important making of the tea!
